Fashion Magazine Review: W Magazine – April 2016
Surprisingly enough this is the first time that I have reviewed W Magazine on the blog! I have been subscribed to the magazine for years, but hadn’t written about it, so I decided that now was the time to change that!
This issue of W is special because it features some impressive talents entering the industry such as Zendaya and Willow Smith. However, I actually don’t want to focus on their feature in this issue, because another photo shoot really stood out to me and captured all of my attention. The shoot is entitled Joy Ride by Ryan McGinley!

I will be honest, I had never heard of Ryan before, but that didn’t surprise me when I began looking him up and searching through his online portfolios. Most of his work looks like it is from the 1970’s hippie era featuring an assortment of nude men and women letting it all hang out. Nowhere on his website showed any fashion photography work, but it did give me a deep insight into his style.
This photo shoot immediately brought me to a simpler mindset. The images bring out a sense of youth to me. They show a joviality that I don’t see in a lot of images. Almost a feeling of innocence, but with a secret. The images are captivating because they have so much depth to them.
The images on his website are striking, because they show people in vulnerable situations, yet living life so freely. This same esthetic comes through in this fashion spread, the model isn’t naked, but she has a sense of freedom and passion for life. The scenery and clothes work together to create a surreal fantasy life, one that I am led to believe would be found inside the model’s own imagination.
What I appreciate about this fashion spread and W Magazine in general is their sense of rebellion from mainstream beauty and fashion. This photo shoot really impacted me and that is what fashion photography is supposed to do!
As always let me know what you think in the comments below! McGinley’s work isn’t run of the mill beauty and fashion so I want to know what you all thought of his images!
Until next time, live your dreams and may passion never die!
